how much does treatment for mange cost for a dog?
i think my dog has mange so i made an appointment with the vet for Wednesday but i was wondering if it is mange does anyone know how much it would cost from experience? she started loosing hair around her eyes & they look swollen and red and shes been really itchy and shes been biting so hard that theirs spots where shes missing fur now ![]()
I got a puppy (a bischon mix) and everything was fine for a year, then he started scratching and biting himself until he looked like I had been abusing him (bloody, bald spots everywhere). He hid under the bed for the next year and a half while I took him to several vets. One of them only gave me an antibiotic spray for hot spots, which of course didn’t work; one of them said he needed a $40/week dip in something, so we did that for awhile and he always felt better but after 6 weeks of this he really wasn’t getting any better. Then my friend suggested I take him to an old country vet, which I did and I’m glad I did! He did a scraping, looked under the microscope and said he has red mange, not contagious and he explained it to be like acne was for humans, i.e., all dogs have it, it lives in their hair follicles, he just happens to be bothered by it. Because he still had bloody sores all over, he gave me cipro (an antibiotic) and he said it HAD to be cipro and to go to the farm store and get 1% injectable ivermectin. The dosage to use for heartworm medication is .1cc per every 10 lbs., but he at least needs to be on .8cc’s of the ivermectin for it to do any good, so to increase it every few days until I got him up to the .8cc’s a day and if he starts throwing up, drop back down to the previous dose and try to work him back up to the .8cc’s a day. He is 28 lbs. so the dose needs to be triple the norm. Thankfully, this treatment has worked and I now have a happy dog but I still have to keep him on the ivermectin or it comes back. The vet also said that if it didn’t work, then we could try cancer drugs but the dog won’t last very long on them. He also said it is an immune disorder that is found in certain breeds…not contagious.
What should I do about my dogs rash?
Dealing with Dogs Rash
okay so I have a 1 year old red nose pit bull. And he has all these bald spots on his back and sides. It started off as just one small spot and turned into many spots all over. They aren’t red and they don’t seem to bother or itch him. He isn’t acting or eating any differently.
I’ve already taken him to the vet and I’m super pissed because I just spent $ 160 on the visit and a skin scrap, to hear the vet say she we need to spend $ 200 on more test because she didn’t see mights but there’s this one might that he could have but she doesn’t really know so she wants to give him every kind of medicine. F*** the vet! I don’t want to waste my time on playing process of elimination. I don’t have that kind of money. And its just a rash!!!
Also the skin scraping made my dog bleed so now he has 6 bloody spots on his body and for what? To find out he doesn’t have a certain kind of mite? Btw she didn’t even examine the rash she just said “oh well this kind of mite is common in this kind of breed of dog”.
Possible Cause of Dogs Rash
Does anyone know how to treat mange, mites, or skin allergy’s?
Because that pretty much what he could have. I would take him to another vet but I really don’t have the money to go waste another $ 70 on just the visit and a what ever dollar amount on more tests that should that he doesn’t have something.
And if any one thinks I should have a dog then keep it to yourself. This dog, bruno we got him from the pound this june. He was going to be put down. I fought for a whole month save him from being put down and they desided to do it anyways. So i had to call about 30 rescues to help me get him out of there the day he was scheduled to be put down. And we saved him just in time. And he’s very happy here. So I may not have a whole lot of money to waste on every single test but its better than being dead.
Dogs Rash Remedies
Anyways, if you could tell me of a cream or anything I can do or feed him that might help I’m open to all suggestions. Thank you
I completely understand your frustration, I’m more of an advocate for home remedies IF you know what the problem is exactly.
What your dog has sounds like mange for which you’d need pesticide dips which only your vet can prescribe for you…
Allergies are only found by testing..which again your vet can only do.
You can try switching your dogs food to something that doesn’t have corn which could possibly be a factor in your dogs bald spots.
Aloe gel helps to stop itching and bacterial infection, and works well for hotspots but this doesn’t sound like a hotspot.

OTC mange treatment for dogs?
Anyone know of a good over the counter treatment for the mange? My dog is a shepard/collie mix, and has a large bald spot covering one hip, and the fur at the base of his tail is starting to thin out as well. I’m not even sure which type of mange it is. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to take him to the vet, and even if I could afford it, Bandit is large, strong, and impossible to control. It would take nothing short of a tranquilizer dart to knock him out for a few hours in order to get him to the vet and get professional treatment. Any suggestions?
I have heard a few people tell me about the "motor oil" treatment, and they all claim to have used it and it worked, but I’m not sure how safe it is, so I hesitate to use it.
And I would love to take him to a vet, but I can’t. As I said, I can’t afford it, and he would be impossible to control long enough to get treatment. I live in a small town, away from any big cities, or even medium sized cities for that matter. The nearest vet is 1/2 hour drive, and they not only charge for the treatment, but also a flat fee for their time. To even get him there would require me to get a cage to stick him in while he’s in the car, and all the ones that I’ve seen that might be large enough for him aren’t cheap.
OTC’s are harmful to pets. Many mange treatments are carcinogens. The safest way for you dog is to have a vet treat it.
