Is it really THREE WEEKS after treatment before mange mites die?
I’ve been reading on the internet that it takes 3 weeks for mange mites to completely die after the first treatment. Does that mean this dog can’t be around other dogs for 3 weeks? Or are the mange mites still alive but unable to infect other dogs (like they’re slowly dying)?
Does anybody know definitively? I’ve read so many conflicting things on the internet, I’m about to scream!
This is a rescue who received free treatment. I do not have a vet at my disposal.
Also, as per two other vets, skin scrapings do NOT determine whether a dog has mange or not. Only 20% of dogs with any type of mange have positive skin scrapings.
Sometimes it can take longer it all depends on the strength of the treatment and the infestation. Talk to your vet to be sure. If it is sarcoptic mange then I wouldn’t let this dog around other dogs until the skin scrapings come back with ZERO mites, otherwise you are still putting the other dogs at risk for catching the mange. The only way to know for sure is to talk to your vet.

what did the vet say?

Call a vet, that’s your best answer. They can tell you for sure. But if they DO tell you that yes it takes that long, DO NOT let other dogs around the one w/ mange… you probably shouldn’t be around him that much either. Mange is VERY contagious to people and dogs, it’s just called Scabies when people get it. I’ve known people who have had Scabies and it is incredilby itchy, spreads fast, and you have to sterilize every place you’ve been in or touched anything and then apply a cream to your entire body for several days straight. If you even think your dog has mange go get it tested right now.

Mange diseases are treatable and prevention isn't that tough, either. An infestation can be exceedingly uncomfortable for your dog, and there isn't any reason to let it continue.
