****Anyone have experience with dogs who have/had Demodex mange?
Hi!
My 4 month old puppy has Demodex mange (yes, she was diagnosed with it). The vet gave me some Goodwinol (I think that is what it is called) Ointment to apply to the patches everyday, however, it seems like she is getting more and more patches everyday. You can hardly notice unless you know they are there but I’d have to apply the oinment basically on her whole stomach just to get every area.
My question is, what other effective treaments are there and about how much do they cost? My vet mentioned oral meds and a "dip", never said anything about shampoo…?
Thanks!! =)
Thanks to your answers so far, however, I’m really wondering the cost of treatments you’ve used and what worked.
I hate it when people answer my questions with info I already know like, "Take her back to the vet and find something more effective"….I’m not a RETARD…I know that!!
She IS going back to the vet but not for another 2 more weeks!
Don’t "answer" my question if you are either stating pure common sense or giving the same answer other people have already given.
But thanks to the ones who have left some great answers so far!! =)
My 8 month old puppy was diagnosed with it as well. The vet gave me a medicated shampoo and a dip, that we had to bathe him in once per week for 4 weeks (We’re still have one treatment left and it already went away). The dip was VERY strong, and my dog was usually lethargic for about 2-3 days after each bath. (which the Vet said was normal).
All together, it was $95 through my vet. I can’t remember the name, but I have it at home, I will answer again tonight and let you know exactly what it is called. It worked really well and it is all cleared up now.

If it’s not working as expected, time to go back to the vet and explore the next step – perhaps the dog’s case needs more intensive treatment than just the ointment. It appears there are some other alternatives. Good luck to you.

My dog had mange around his neck and was very pinkish. I just gave him a bath with medicated dog shampoo and it was gone after a few weeks. Maybe you can go to the pet store and ask?

look to a good puppy food ; also look into information about deficiencies ; I don’t recall it right now but previously when they suspected my dog had it , I did the research and then supplemented based upon my research; most puppy foods bought at a grocery store don’t have all the vitamins, minerals and oils needed by the animal; I also used NEEM shampoo which is a natural fungus , insect repellant , widely used and found in countries by natives ; you can buy it on Ebay and certain specialty pet stores
In India, the tree is variously known as "Divine Tree", "Heal All", "Nature’s Drugstore", "Village Pharmacy" and "Panacea for all diseases". Products made from neem have proven medicinal properties, being antihelmintic, antifungal, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-infertility. It is particularly prescribed for skin disease (Puri, 1999).
Neem twigs are used for brushing teeth in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This practice is perhaps one of the earliest and most effective forms of dental care.
All parts of the tree (seeds, leaves, flowers and bark) are used for preparing many different medical preparation.
Neem Oil is used for preparing cosmetics (soap, shampoo, balms and creams).
Besides its use in traditional Indian medicine the neem tree is of great importance for its anti-desertification properties and possibly as a good carbon dioxide sink.
Neem oil is useful for skin care such as acne, and keeping skin elasticity.
Practictioners of traditional Indian medicine recommend that patients suffering from Chicken Pox sleep on neem leaves.
Neem Gum is used as a bulking agent and for the preparation of special purpose food (those for diabetics).
look to nature to assist you; all dogs have mange but when their immunities are low it emerges ; for other dogs it stays in check ; all the chemicals , dips etc don’t make sense to a puppy unless it is so severe and out of control ; build puppy up so he has all the tools to fight it both internally by health and externally by Neem Shampoo; medicated shampoo to help with itch etc
recommend the dog be put on a good multivitamin/ fatty acid supplement. Because Demodex flourishes on dogs with a suppressed immune system.

Sorry to hear this, my dog had this last year and I have no idea where he got it, The vet gave him ointment, shampoo and antibiotic’s. I had to give him a bath everyday and let the medicated shampoo sit on him for a 10-15 min. (hard to say the least) Its importunate to keep up with the treatment, it will then go away.

Do what your vet says for this one. Without seeing it its hard to tell the best treatment.
One thing to remember with demodex is it is often brought on by stress. I have had many that rescue remedy did help in addition to vet plans.

Goodwinol does work, but not for every case. It sounds as if your pup has a very tough case of Demodex. Ivermectin is the treatment of choice for a lot of vets, it’s an anti-parasite medication that has had good results. Or, a benzoyl peroxide bath followed by a mitaban dip is also used. Interceptor has also been found to be a good treatment for demodex, but it is very expensive, as it needs to be applied every day for 3 months or so. I’d ask your vet about any of these possibilites.

I’m a Certified Veterinary Technician.
In addition to the Goodwinol, call the vet up and ask if you can get her a Mitaban dip. Ask if the puppy is old enough to receive the dip. It will take a series of mitaban dips to get rid of it, but it works. Call them and see.

We had a rescue/foster doberman with Red Mange (demodicosis). The only treatment that worked with her was Ivamectin (oral liquid). We had tried the dips, but they just caused secondary skin problems.
Prices are going to vary from vet to vet. This foster came through about 5 yrs ago, and the bottle of liquid meds then were about $85, so I would guess about $120 or better now. I can’t remember how big the bottle was, but I do recall it lasting about 2 months though.

Well, I had a dog with demodex, and I tried many different remedies, but… the only thing that worked was….
I switched my dog to a raw prey model diet and supplemented with Salmon Oil capsules.
This is actually very cheap. I spent less on my dogs food when I switched to feeding raw than when I was feeding a top of the line dog food.
My dog had demodectic mange for a while… over eight months while I tried all kinds of stuff. Within 3-4 weeks on the raw diet and the Salmon Oil (for the Omega 3′s) all her hair grew back.
If you’ve got any questions about it, please feel free to e-mail me and ask.
Good luck.
