Mange is a very serious situation. There are two kinds: sarcoptic, which is very contagious, but easy to cure, and demodectic, which is not contagious, but takes a long time to cure. First, a vet needs to do a scraping to find out which kind of mange it is so it can be treated correctly. A shot of Ivomec, followed by another shot or two will clear it up in two or three weeks. They also should have regular baths with a special shampoo, which you can do after the vet has seen your pet. If you want a pet, you must be prepared to make sacrifices when he becomes ill. However, if you talk to your vet and say that you want to cooperate, he will tell you how to do the baths. Also, if you are willing to learn to give shots, some agricultural stores will sell you the Ivomec and show you how to do it. But be sure to give your dog the best possible treatment possible. He deserves it.

Most dog keepers will cope with mange at one time or another. There are 3 distinct kinds of mange, 2 of which need vet intervention. It brings itching and light dandruff over the dog’s body. Cheyletiella is the least heavy type of mange. These herbal treatments are given orally in most situations. They help in fighting against mange by turbocharging your dog’s immune mechanism.

The products you choose should be authorised for topical use. Some pure fancy oils are damaging, so be certain to read the instructions and cares before applying important oils to your dog’s skin. As hideous as the dog looks, and as uncomfortable he's with the itching, the genuine threat is infection. Mange bring about a real load on the dog’s immune reaction as it attempts to attack and eject the mites. That immunological reaction can be further stressed by infection due to the dog’s continuing scratching and rolling around. When a patch of skin gets infected and the dog’s defenses are puny, then you've got the potential for much more serious problems. The mites will reproduce and when this occurs, there'll be a sharp odour coming from the areas affected.

Treating your dog naturally is always the most sensible way to go, but in serious cases, it is best to make a trip to your vet. Your pet could also develop blisters and bleeding. If you suspect that your dog has mange, you will be wanting to raise your pets immunological response with herbal additions. The different indications of Mange are : Hair Loss-this could be a small or a lot, Itching and scratching-This usually only happens in the area affected, Red spots, Blisters, and Infection. There are various symptoms for every illness, condition and infection out there so it's very important if you've any concerns or your dog is showing symptoms to search out medical assistance for your loved family pet. One of the largest concerns with mange is the secondary bacterial infection. It is exceedingly important when you first spot indications of Mange to see a Vet immediately.

i think my dog has mange so i made an appointment with the vet for Wednesday but i was wondering if it is mange does anyone know how much it would cost from experience? she started loosing hair around her eyes & they look swollen and red and shes been really itchy and shes been biting so hard that theirs spots where shes missing fur now

I got a puppy (a bischon mix) and everything was fine for a year, then he started scratching and biting himself until he looked like I had been abusing him (bloody, bald spots everywhere). He hid under the bed for the next year and a half while I took him to several vets. One of them only gave me an antibiotic spray for hot spots, which of course didn’t work; one of them said he needed a $40/week dip in something, so we did that for awhile and he always felt better but after 6 weeks of this he really wasn’t getting any better. Then my friend suggested I take him to an old country vet, which I did and I’m glad I did! He did a scraping, looked under the microscope and said he has red mange, not contagious and he explained it to be like acne was for humans, i.e., all dogs have it, it lives in their hair follicles, he just happens to be bothered by it. Because he still had bloody sores all over, he gave me cipro (an antibiotic) and he said it HAD to be cipro and to go to the farm store and get 1% injectable ivermectin. The dosage to use for heartworm medication is .1cc per every 10 lbs., but he at least needs to be on .8cc’s of the ivermectin for it to do any good, so to increase it every few days until I got him up to the .8cc’s a day and if he starts throwing up, drop back down to the previous dose and try to work him back up to the .8cc’s a day. He is 28 lbs. so the dose needs to be triple the norm. Thankfully, this treatment has worked and I now have a happy dog but I still have to keep him on the ivermectin or it comes back. The vet also said that if it didn’t work, then we could try cancer drugs but the dog won’t last very long on them. He also said it is an immune disorder that is found in certain breeds…not contagious.

I know that it will eventually go away on its own, but in the meantime I don’t want him to lose his hair or have to suffer through the itching. The vet has given us a shampoo and conditioner for him and that seems to relieve the itching, but it doesn’t seem to treat the actual cause. The vet also prescribed some pills that we’ve already treated him with, but the condition is still there. I’d like to try some old home remedies if they’re safe for him

More About Demodectic Mange

If anyone knows of some kind of home remedy that works for this condition, I’d love to hear it. Thanks so much.

At our clinic we usually prescribe something called Goodwinol, and it’s an ointment that you use to treat the demodex locally. It works by actually killing the mites. You might also want to try a shampoo for dogs that contains benzoyl peroxide, if that isn’t what you are using already.

I’ve been reading on the internet that it takes 3 weeks for mange mites to completely die after the first treatment. Does that mean this dog can’t be around other dogs for 3 weeks? Or are the mange mites still alive but unable to infect other dogs (like they’re slowly dying)?

Does anybody know definitively? I’ve read so many conflicting things on the internet, I’m about to scream!
This is a rescue who received free treatment. I do not have a vet at my disposal.

Also, as per two other vets, skin scrapings do NOT determine whether a dog has mange or not. Only 20% of dogs with any type of mange have positive skin scrapings.

Sometimes it can take longer it all depends on the strength of the treatment and the infestation. Talk to your vet to be sure. If it is sarcoptic mange then I wouldn’t let this dog around other dogs until the skin scrapings come back with ZERO mites, otherwise you are still putting the other dogs at risk for catching the mange. The only way to know for sure is to talk to your vet.

i was adviced to use a pinch of sulphur with milk to cure dog mange ……i have seen improvement in my dog ,growth of hair, reduced scratching..but am unsure of the dose and how long to continue…any ideas?
vet has prescribed half of 12 mg ivermectin for six weeks (because its a young dog) and 3 days dose of avil…..which treatment should i follow?
she has small pink boils so i think its Sarcoptic mange

Our shepherd is just coming to the end of treatment.

I used Omega Oil capsules (1000 mg), 400 iu Vitamin E, selenium and 50 mg Zinc in her food. I was also using an antibacterial shampoo twice a week. I found a drop of grapefruit seed extract in each handful of shampoo was great too – its a really powerful antibacterial/antiviral/antimicrobial agent so use with care!

Homeopathically I was giving her sulphur, graphite and silicea tabs (30X) twice a day, for seven days only, break of 3 days, then another dose for a week.

I think a combination of all this really helped her. You have to be patient – its a long, slow cure unfortunately. Please check with your vet before trying out any of the above just to make sure they will be safe and suitable for your pet. Best of luck.

I have spent in Excess of $900 at two different vets. I live in a big city with the best care. I am going at a different angle because I am worried that she will become Toxic from meds. Please Dont Answer if you need to be Critical. We adore our pet.
This Is DEMODICTIC mange

Unfortunately, Demodectic mange is the worst one, as it is caused by the parasites that already live in all of us. It usually comes out because of a weakened immune system, which can be caused by a malnourished mom, or removing the puppies from mom too soon. Please do not take your dog off the vet meds. It takes a long time for the symptoms of this kind of mange to go away, and if you pull the meds now, you might have a nasty recurrence.
I have a dog who I adopted at three months-she had mange so bad she was completely bald. We gave her all the meds for 7 months, and she is now completely a beauty queen. My vet gave me an immune system supplement vitamin to boost her immunities. It is only available from a vet and is called Duralactin. It is made from mothers milk and has mom’s immunities in it. It strengthened her immune system and enabled her to heal much faster than normal, and she has no bald patch recurrence at all.
You also need to know that this type of mange can recurr at any time during your dogs life, and you will need to be on the lookout for it.
